Met Amalia Ottone, Margo Fontijne en Marco Ottone. Een concert door getalenteerde musici die optreden met viola da gamba’s van verschillende afmetingen – sopraan, tenor en bas – dat een muzikale reis biedt door vijf Europese landen en drie eeuwen geschiedenis, van de 16e tot en met de 18e eeuw.

Vanaf de Renaissance heeft de viola da gamba zich gevestigd als een van de meest iconische en verfijnde instrumenten van de Europese koninklijke hoven en adellijke huizen. Het instrument werd gewaardeerd om zijn unieke vermogen de menselijke stem na te bootsen en om zijn diepe, omhullende klank.

Het concert neemt het publiek mee op een reis die begint bij de Italiaanse oorsprong van de viola da gamba en via Engeland, Frankrijk, Duitsland en Nederland de culturele en muzikale bijzonderheden van elke plek verkent.

Het programma omvat werken van componisten zoals Ortiz, Coperario, Ruffo, Schenck, Abel, Forqueray, Marais en Sainte-Colombe, die speciaal voor de viola da gamba hebben gecomponeerd en zo hebben bijgedragen aan het repertoire dat dit instrument beroemd maakte aan de adellijke hoven van heel Europa.

De composities, vaak bedoeld voor ensemble-uitvoeringen, getuigen van de buitengewone veelzijdigheid van het instrument, dat zich wist aan te passen aan verschillende stijlen en smaken. Het concert illustreert hoe de viola da gamba het symbool werd van verfijnd aristocratisch vermaak, zoals te zien is in schilderijen zoals The Allegory of Hearing van Jan Brueghel de Oude en David Leeuw en Cornelia Hooft met hun kinderen van Abraham van den Tempel, waar consortmuziek met viola da gamba’s centraal stond tijdens adellijke muziekevenementen.

Een speciaal eerbetoon wordt gebracht aan het Frankrijk van Lodewijk XIV, waar de viola da gamba zijn hoogtepunt bereikte en een zeer populair instrument werd aan het hof van de Zonnekoning, met een grote invloed op de muzikale praktijk in heel Europa.

Het concert “Her Majesty the Viol” is een unieke gelegenheid om je onder te dompelen in de geschiedenis en schoonheid van meer dan drie eeuwen muziek. Dankzij de virtuositeit van de musici en de sfeervolle ambiance van de Keizersgrachtkerk in Amsterdam zal het publiek worden meegenomen op een tijdloze muzikale en culturele reis.

Amalia Ottone began playing the viola da gamba at the age of five under the guidance of her father and of Maestro Claudia Pasetto at the O. Respighi Conservatory in Latina; at the same institution she obtained the diploma under the guidance of Gianni La Marca and Noelia Reverte. She currently studies at the E.F. Conservatory of Music E.F. Dall’Abaco in Verona with Maestro Claudia Pasetto.
She participated in masterclasses held by the masters Paolo Pandolfo, Paolo Biordi, Vittorio Ghielmi, Pere Ros, Arianne Maurette, Lucile Boulanger and Teodoro Baù.
In 2020 she was a finalist in the international Viola da Gamba competition “Gianni Bergamo” held at the Conservatory of Italian Switzerland in Lugano.
Since 2023 she has been violist of the Enea Barock Orchestra.

Margo Fontijne (Amsterdam) Margo studied viola da gamba with Anneke Pols and Wieland Kuijken, and attended masterclasses with Jordi Savall, Alison Crum, Laurence Dreyfuss and Sophie Watillon. She finished this study by the statal exam – in the same years she completed a study Pedagogical Sciences at Universiteit van Amsterdam.
Performing on viola da gamba and vielle, she has decades of experience in historically informed performances with repertoire from the late Middle Ages to the end of the 18th century, especially as an ensemble musician and accompanist.
Her membership (since 2001, as a co-founder) of the Amsterdam based Ensemble Corona shows her affinity and expertise for the earlier music (15th-16th centuries), but she also really likes playing in the lovely 17th- and 18th century high baroque chamber music and cantatas.
Since several years she is happily joining theatre group Theater Kwast as a solo theatre musician in their projects with Dutch 17th and 18th century plays, with dedicated historical music; in particular in the annual famous “Gijsbrecht van Aemstel” performances.
Margo Fontijne has a large viola da gamba teaching practice in Amsterdam.

 Marco Ottone, Biologist, Musician and Luthier, he dedicates profoundly to early music and its instruments. He has accomplished his studies in Viola da Gamba at the Conservatory O. Respighi in Latina with Claudia Pasetto, Gianni La Marca and Noelia Reverte. He has taken part to several masterclasses with some of the major Gambists: Paolo Pandolfo, Pere Ros, Wieland Kuijken, Cristophe Coin, Juan Manuel Quintana. He is a stable member of other ensembles such as “Guerra Amorosa”, “ContrArco Consort”, “Ars Musicae” and “La Pellegrina”, giving concerts in festivals in Italy and abroad. He has recorded CD’s for Baryton and Da Vinci Classic.
