Alberto Novello, hoofd van de afdeling Elektronische Muziek van het Pollini Conservatorium in Padua en multimediakunstenaar afgestudeerd aan het Koninklijk Conservatorium Den Haag, levert zijn bijdrage aan de door de gemeente Den Haag georganiseerde vieringen in het kader van de 125e geboortedag van Escher.
Van 21 tot en met 24 september, in de avonduren, zal Alberto Novello het strand van Scheveningen verlichten met BLACKLIGHT X, een originele laser & sound show. Per avond zullen drie shows plaatsvinden, om 20.30, 21.30 en 22.30 uur.
Novello legt uit: “in BLACKLIGHT X schilderen multiple laserprojectoren op een oppervlak bestaande uit verschillende grote containers bedekt met fotosensibele verf. Contrasterend met de hectische maar precieze laserbewegingen komen er langzaamaan uit de kleinste details structuren tevoorschijn die doen denken aan steden, bossen, buitenaardse architecturen en evoluerende abstracte werelden, geïnspireerd door het werk van M.C. Escher. BLACKLIGHT X is een contemplatieve live performance waarin de tijd wordt uitgesteld om tegenwicht te bieden aan de haast van het moderne leven: onzichtbaar licht onthult wat verborgen is, zoals fosfor dat zijn spoor uitbreidt, en legt het verstrijken van de tijd vast. Zoals in de meeste van mijn recente werken is geluid het signaal dat de laserstraal beweegt in een synesthetisch en synchroon geheel dat wordt blootgesteld aan de zintuigen van het publiek”.
Het project BLACKLIGHT X is tevens door de gemeente Den Haag geselecteerd als openingsshow van het festival Horizon in 2024, dat de opvolger wordt van het vuurwerkfestival dat jaarlijks honderdduizenden bezoekers naar het strand van Scheveningen trok. Gezien de internationale rol van de stad presenteert de gemeente Den Haag het festival Horizon als gelegenheid voor een vriendschappelijke competitie tussen landen in het tentoonstellen van hun kunsten.
Dit project wordt gepresenteerd in samenwerking met de Italiaanse ambassade in Nederland en het Italiaans Cultureel Instituut.

BLACKLIGHT X – Alberto Novello – a celebration of Escher
Alberto Novello, director of the Electronic Music Department of the Pollini Conservatory of Padua and multimedia artist graduated from the Royal Conservatory of The Hague, participates in the celebrations of the 125th anniversary of Escher’s birth, organized by the Municipality of The Hague.
In the evenings of 21 to 24 September, Alberto Novello will illuminate the beach of Scheveningen with the original audiovisual show for lasers and sounds BLACKLIGHT X. Three shows will take place per evening, at 20.30, 21.30 and 22.30 p.m.
Novello explains: “In BLACKLIGHT X, multiple laser projectors are used to paint on a surface made of several large shipping containers covered with photosensitive paint. In contrast with the frenetic yet precise laser movements, structures with minute details slowly emerge resembling cities, forests, alien architectures, and evolving abstract worlds inspired by the work of M.C.Escher . BLACKLIGHT X is a contemplative live performance in which time is dilated to counterbalance the haste of modern life: invisible light revealing what is hidden, as phosphor extends its trace, capturing the passage of time. As in most of my recent work, sound is the signal that moves the laser beam in a synaesthetic and synchronic discourse exposed for the audience senses.”.
The BLACKLIGHT X project has also been selected by the Municipality of The Hague as the opening show for next year’s Horizon Festival, which will be the successor of the fireworks festival that attracted hundreds of thousands of visitors to the beach every year. Given the international role of the city, the Municipality presents the upcoming Horizon Festival as an occasion to host a friendly competition between nations in exhibiting their arts.
The project is presented in collaboration with the Italian Embassy in the Kingdom of the Netherlands and with the Italian Cultural Institute in Amsterdam.
