How to Photograph a black hole. Conference on the occasion of the Italian Research Day in the World

Locandina Buco Nero corretta (002)

On the occasion of the Italian Research Day in the World, the Embassy of Italy in the Kingdom of the Netherlands is pleased to present, in collaboration with the Italian Cultural Institute of Amsterdam, the conference “How to Photograph a black hole” featuring Professor Luciano Rezzolla, Professor of Theoretical Astrophysics at Goethe University Frankfurt and Andrews Professor of Astronomy at Trinity College Dublin (TCD) as well as author of the recent book The Irresistible Attraction of Gravity, and Professor Violette Impellizzeri, Professor at Leiden University and member of the Leiden Observatory and the Event Horizon Telescope collaboration.

Event Presentation

Black holes remain among the most fascinating objects predicted by Einstein’s theory of gravity. A characteristic property of black holes is their possession of an event horizon, a surface beyond which light is captured. So how is it possible to take a picture of them?

During the event, the two Italian astrophysicists will explain in simple terms what a black hole is and the observational and theoretical effort required to capture the first image of a black hole. The image of a black hole will also serve as the starting point for a journey into the irresistible attraction of the theory of gravity.

The event will be held in English, with free registration on our website.
