Ter gelegenheid van de 9e editie van de Italian Design Day zijn de Italiaanse Ambassade in Den Haag en het Italiaans Cultureel Instituut in Amsterdam verheugd een evenement te presenteren gewijd aan Italiaans design wereldwijd:
MITA (Manifattura Italiana Tappeti Artistici) van Mario Alberto Ponis

Het thema van dit jaar, “Ongelijkheden. Design voor een beter leven”, staat centraal in een presentatie van Matteo Fochessati, curator van het Wolfsoniana Museum – Palazzo Ducale Cultuur Stichting in Genua. Zijn lezing richt zich op MITA, een uitzonderlijk voorbeeld van hoe innovatie in design de kwaliteit van leven kan verbeteren.
Er wordt ook aandacht besteed aan ondernemer, uitvinder en verzamelaar Mario Alberto Ponis, die in 1926 MITA oprichtte met als doel de traditie van handgeknoopte tapijten te combineren met de technologie van mechanische weefgetouwen. Door de jaren heen groeide MITA uit tot een centrum van creatieve uitmuntendheid, met samenwerkingen met kunstenaars als Fortunato Depero, Gio Ponti, Emilio Scanavino en Arnaldo Pomodoro. Matteo Fochessati zal laten zien hoe voortdurende innovatie MITA in staat stelde haar productie uit te breiden met stoffen en artistieke panelen, waardoor kunst toegankelijk werd voor een breder publiek.
De presentatie werpt ook een licht op de veelzijdigheid van Mario Alberto Ponis, bekend om zijn vele gepatenteerde uitvindingen, waaronder de beroemde Chiocciola-caravan, en zijn samenwerking met de Italiaanse luchtmacht bij de ontwikkeling van uitrusting voor piloten. Zijn passie voor kunst komt tot uiting in een collectie die zijn banden met kunstenaars als Emanuele Luzzati, Oscar Saccorotti en Enrico Paulucci weerspiegelt.
Tot slot wordt het architectonische aspect besproken, met speciale aandacht voor het historische gebouw van MITA in Genua Nervi, ontworpen door architect Luigi C. Daneri. Dit meesterwerk vertegenwoordigt de principes van Italiaans rationalisme en internationaal functionalisme.
Dit evenement verweeft traditie, innovatie en sociale betrokkenheid en biedt een unieke gelegenheid om te ontdekken hoe Italiaans design kan inspireren tot een beter leven.
De Italian Design Day, opgericht in 2017, promoot Italiaans design wereldwijd door middel van initiatieven die gelijktijdig op mondiaal niveau plaatsvinden.

This year’s theme, “Inequalities. Design for a Better Life,” will be explored in a presentation by Matteo Fochessati, the curator of the Wolfsonian Museum – Palazzo Ducale Foundation for Culture in Genoa. He will focus on MITA, a remarkable example of how innovation in design can enhance the quality of life.
The presentation will delve into the legacy of Mario Alberto Ponis, the entrepreneur, inventor, and collector who founded MITA in 1926. Ponis envisioned merging the tradition of hand-knotted carpets with advanced mechanical loom technology. Over the decades, MITA became a hub of creativity, collaborating with internationally renowned artists such as Fortunato Depero, Gio Ponti, Emilio Scanavino, and Arnaldo Pomodoro. Fochessati will highlight how MITA’s continuous innovation led to the expansion of its production into textiles and art panels, helping democratize art and make it accessible to a broader audience.
The eclectic personality of Mario Alberto Ponis will also be in the spotlight. Beyond his entrepreneurial ventures, he patented numerous devices, including the iconic Chiocciola caravan, and collaborated with the Italian Air Force on specialized equipment for pilots. His deep connection to the art world is evident in his collection, featuring works by artists such as Emanuele Luzzati, Oscar Saccorotti, and Enrico Paulucci.
Architectural elements will be explored as well, focusing on the historic MITA building in Genoa Nervi, designed by Luigi C. Daneri. This landmark exemplifies the principles of Italian rationalism and international functionalism.
Italian Design Day, launched in 2017 by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, the Ministry of Culture, and ADI (Italian Association of Industrial Design), is an annual event showcasing Italian creativity. Each year, 100 global testimonials narrate the story of Italian design and its impact worldwide.
